Prestwick.

Runway action, close-up taxiing aircraft and far-apron views — all from one accessible spotting location.

Location Overview

One mound. Plenty to see.

For BTB’s first visit to Glasgow Prestwick Airport, The Mound was the obvious choice — and it lived up to its reputation. It offers a brilliant view across the runway and towards the far apron, with aircraft sometimes taxiing right beside the perimeter fence.

The notes below are based on BTB’s visit in October 2026, including the lenses used and how to reach the spotting position without a car.

Field Guide

The Mound.

BTB’s go-to position for Prestwick, with excellent visibility and straightforward access.

Preferred Position

01

Runway & apron views.

The Mound overlooks the runway and far apron. Landings and departures are well within reach of a 70–200mm lens, while aircraft using the taxiway beside the fence can be surprisingly close.

Finding the position

By car

The Mound is marked on Google Maps and is straightforward to find. BTB found plenty of parking available on site.

By train or on foot

Allow approximately 30 minutes to walk from Prestwick Airport’s main terminal and railway station. A car is not essential.

Lens Guide

18–55mm

Close taxiing aircraft

Worth bringing for larger aircraft using the taxiway beside the fence. Even 70mm can be too tight here.

Longer telephoto

Far apron detail

Helpful for tighter photographs of aircraft on the far apron, but not essential for a worthwhile visit.

BTB’s experience

The 70–200mm was more than sufficient for landing and departing aircraft. For larger aircraft taxiing close to the fence, BTB switched to an 18–55mm lens to fit the aircraft into the frame. Extra reach would help on the far apron, but it is a bonus rather than a requirement.

Access note

These observations reflect BTB’s visit. Parking arrangements and access can change. Stay in publicly accessible areas, follow local signs, keep gates and access routes clear, and do not cross the airfield perimeter fence.
