Behind The Lens

A passion for aviation, a camera, and a reason to keep improving.

The Beginning

It started with a camera.

Beyond the Barrier began as a place to document aviation photography, share the images worth showing, and create a reason to keep getting out with a camera and improving.

The original plan was simple: an Instagram page, perhaps Facebook too, and somewhere to follow the progress. There was no grand plan for a full website or a collection of photography location guides.

But one photograph led to another. New locations, different aircraft and fresh challenges followed. BTB has grown alongside the photography itself — and the idea is still to keep learning, shooting and sharing the results.

Behind the Name

More than a name.

Beyond the Barrier takes its name from a different perspective on aviation photography.

Many aircraft photographs are taken from outside an airport perimeter. BTB also has the opportunity to photograph from the apron at Inverness Airport, where airside photography is carried out with permission.

That access inspired the name: a chance to capture moments from beyond the barrier, while continuing to explore the views available from the other side of the fence too.

The Journey Continues

Always looking further.

From everyday movements at Inverness to dedicated photography trips further afield, every visit is an opportunity to try something new.

BTB is about more than collecting photographs. It is about discovering new places to shoot, working out what makes a location worthwhile, and sharing those experiences through practical, first-hand field guides.

There is always another aircraft to photograph, another angle to try and another place to explore. The project is still growing — and that is part of the point.
