Field Guide

Preferred positions.

Two positions regularly used by BTB, with directions, lens recommendations and first-hand shooting notes for each.

Preferred Position

01

Arrivals

The preferred BTB position for arriving traffic, offering a better view of aircraft as they approach and continue towards touchdown.

Finding the position

From the railway station road

Head towards Inverness Airport Railway Station. As the access road turns right, look to the left for an entrance road leading to a runway gate. Beside it is the public footpath running around the airfield towards the airport.

Follow this footpath towards Position 01. At the location, the grass is cut for approximately a metre alongside the fence, providing space to continue along the fence line and choose your preferred shooting point.

Lens Guide

18–55mm

Environmental

Useful for wider frames that place the aircraft within the runway, landscape and weather.

70–200mm

Recommended

Ideal for closer views of arriving aircraft and aircraft on the ground.

300–600mm

Touchdown

Recommended when the aim is to capture tighter pre-touchdown and touchdown shots further along the runway.

Preferred Position

02

Departures

The preferred BTB position for departures, producing an almost head-on view as aircraft begin their departure.

Finding the position

From Position 01

Continue along the footpath towards the airport. Near the end of the path, it begins to veer left away from the fence. Instead of following it away, continue along the cut grass beside the fence and choose the shooting point that works best for you.

From the terminal

Follow signs towards Inverness Airport Railway Station. This will bring you onto the same footpath. Continue towards Position 02 using the reference below.

From the marked location, turn back towards the fence to access the cut grass area, then follow the fence line until you reach a shooting point that suits you.

Lens Guide

70–200mm

Recommended

The sweet spot for departures from this position, providing enough reach without becoming restrictive as the aircraft gets closer.

Around 300mm

Extra detail

Useful when a tighter frame or additional aircraft detail is wanted.

300mm+

Usually unnecessary

Longer focal lengths can become too restrictive for departures from this position.
